BMW 750 Li

BMW 750 Li
BMW have made a few changes to its flagship 7 series range. They’ve added a few things too. The 2011 7 series range is now the largest range the series has ever seen. There are now 15 models in total. Following the addition of the 750i xDrive, the 750 Li xDrive and the 760 Li in 2010, the 7 series now includes a 3 litre in line 6 that produces similar power to the V8 but with better fuel economy. If you so desire, you can also have a BMW 7 series complete with the M sport package, another first for the 7 series. The M sport package includes an M steering wheel, a new aerodynamics package, new exterior and interior trim as well as 19″ wheels with high performance tyres.
Active steering with a difference is now available on the 7 series. I say with a difference because not only does the 7 series now get BMW’s acclaimed active steering system, but it also gets rear wheel steer as an option. BMW call it integrated active steering and it makes for never seen before precision and control.
All the 750 models are powered by a new 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 which has quite an unusual design. Both the turbos are mounted in the valley between the two banks of cylinders. The exhaust valves are also on the inside of the V with the inlet valves on the outside. This strange arrangement seems to have worked out quite well as the engine produces 400bhp over a 5500 to 6400rpm rev range. Torque is impressive too with 450lb-ft available over an even wider range of 1750 to 4500rpm. The layout allows BMW to squeeze more power from the engine but at the same time allow for greater economy. The greater power available means that this rather large luxury saloon will get from 0 to 60mph in 5.1 seconds or 5 seconds dead if you have the xDrive model.
As well as advanced engineering and improvements to performance and economy, BMW have not forgotten that the 7 series is supposed to be a luxury car. If you can think of a technology that should be in a large luxury saloon then the BMW 7 series has got it. Here are a few things to whet your appetite:

Active headlamps that take into account the topography of the road and will move to allow you to continue to see forwards even over the crest of a hill.

.

Three choices of wood trim

.

Four choices of Nappa leather upholstery

.

New light bars highlight door handles, storage areas and door panels

.

Large, 60×92 cm moon roof made from curved glass with a powered shade

.

Unrivalled space and comfort

.

Black panel technology for instruments for brighter clearer readouts

And of course you get the best technology in the form of integrated hi fi system and satellite navigation. And another World first, an integrated computerised user manual so that you can take advantage of all of BMW 750 Li’s features.

Dodge Charger SRT8

Dodge Charger SRT8
The Chrysler Group are continuing with their promise to rebuild Dodge as their performance brand. This fast paced reincarnation continues to take shape with the addition of another new model ready for 2012. The Dodge Charger SRT8 is new performance model for the 4 door fastback design already familiar to Dodge fans. It is powered by a 6.4 litre Hemi V8 which produces about 465bhp with an even more impressive 465lb ft of torque. This is good enough for 0-60 times in the 4 seconds range and a 175mph top speed.

Porsche Boxster Spyder

Porsche Boxster Spyder
Now the new Porsche Boxster Spyder is a bit of a problem for me. I like it, but I can’t have one. Mainly because I live in the UK, but more on that shortly. The car is based on the current Porsche Boxster S with some modest power and torque hikes. The main thing is though that Porsche have put the Boxster on a strict diet which has resulted in a 80kg saving. Various techniques have been used to save weight. For example air conditioning and sounds are now both optional extras. Gone also is the carpet from the transmission tunnel which is now just painted the same colour as the body. The Boxster S seats have gone in favour of lighter buckets which are none the less more supportive. The biggest thing to go though is the electric folding roof. You now only get a clip on affair which is only designed to be a short term rain cover. It’s no good for fast driving. That’s why the top speed is a little less than that of the standard Boxster S, because you have to take the roof off which increases drag. And that’s the main reason why the Porsche Boxster Spyder doesn’t work for me. Living in the UK means the roof will have to be on all the time.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Manufacturer: Ford
Body Style: Coupe
Layout: Front engine, rear wheel drive
Engine: 5411cc 32v Supercharged V8
Power: 540bhp @ 6000rpm
Torque: 510 lb/ft @ 4500rpm
0-60: 4.5 seconds
Top Speed: 155mph
Comments:
The problem with the Shelby GT500 Mustang if you are a Brit is that it is only available in the UK as a grey import. It is an absolutely stunning car to behold and is a fitting descendant of the classic Mustangs of the 1960′s and 1970′s and at $46k in the United States its also a bargain. Over 500 horse power for less than £30k? Yes please. But that’s where the problem is with the grey import bit. By the time you get one shipped over here, you won’t have paid £28k, you will have paid closer to £47k. At that price it starts to look a bit dodgy though. The interior is utilitarian at best and it still has a live rear axle making for an entertaining drive at least, but don’t try and make one go around a corner too fast. It makes more sense to spend your money on a BMW M3 which is a vastly superior car. It doesn’t quite have the road presence of the Ford though, and to be honest if I had £50k knocking about that I could spend on a car that I would look at more than drive, then I would buy one.

BMW M3 GTS

Power: 444bhp
Torque: TBC
0-60: 4.3 seconds

Comments:
After announcing that they were going to go ahead with the X5 and X6 M cars everyone concluded that M division had finally lost the plot, especially after last year stating that there was no reason to make a new CSL, as there was no demand. However, M Division have rescued thier rep with this baby. It’s not a CSL so they weren’t lying last year, it’s a GTS, which is better. This is a true race car for the street (only if you order it with the optional street pack option). It looks the business too. It will be delivered to the first few customers in Germany around May 2010 and they will be paying somewhere in the region of £105k for it. They will get a very exclusive car for their money though. There are only plans to build 100.
